The event is happening near to Torry Hill, which is about 1/2 a mile from
Doddington, between Doddington and Frinsted. It will start at 12pm.
Our host has got a narrow
gauge steam engine with
about 1 mile of tracking.
We will run rides around
the track thought-out the
afternoon.
The will also be a demo of
tree felling, including chain
sawing whilst hanging in
the tree. Plus chipping the
resultant timber.
There will be a BBQ and
drinks supplied, for a small
donation towards costs.
There should be a few older bikes on display from a local few friends of the
engine owner.
All in all, a fun family day.
Satnav location, directions and more details will be posted to the Yahoo email
list nearer the time.
September Club Night Talk
How does your bike get round corners?
Cornering is one of the best bits of motorcycling. The feeling of coming up to
a corner, pitching the bike over on its side, hitting the line of the bend just
exactly right, and then powering out as the bend opens up into the next
straight is a great feeling that keeps us coming back for more.
Have you ever thought about just exactly what is going on when you go round
a corner? If you wish to extend your understanding come to the September
Club night. Geoff Walker is giving a presentation on what goes on when you
set yourself up to nail that bend. He uses lots of practical examples and really
wants you to get involved by re-asking all those questions you have asked in
the past but were never quite satisfied by the answers.
Geoff will explain many things about cornering from just how it is that you get
the bike at the right angle on every bend (well most do anyway) to why the
bike wants to stand up when applying the front brake. And of course no talk
would be complete with out reference to gyroscopic forces either generated in
the engine or by the wheels.
Geoff has given this talk before to other biking clubs. Experience tells him that
he needs to allocate an hour and a half and still needs to cut it short. So with
this in mind we intend starting at 19 45hr and finishing at 21 15 hrs.
Sandyacres is open from 19 00hrs so can you please get to the club in good
time to sort out your drinks and your social chit chats. That way we can have
a prompt and quiet start to the talk.
Geoff’s qualifications to speak on this subject include both theoretical and
practical experience. He studied Engineering at Cambridge University and
specialised in machine elements. His final year project was on the behaviour
of high-friction rubber in bouncing contact with a hard surface (think Michelin
Pilot Power scrabbling for grip as you apply power whilst going over a bump
that causes you to lose contact with the road. He also has the practical
experience of 30+ years of riding bikes to explain things in a down to earth
way.
