Day 8 As payment for Brian & Diane’s hospitality I had agreed to do some DIY in
the morning. Afterwards, I went off for a ride on my own and got hooked up with
six other bikes who I thought were on route to Le Mans as they all seemed to be
knee down merchants. Great fun! When I got back to the house, Liz was standing
at the end of the drive in her bike gear demanding to be taken out for a blast. It’s a
tough life but somebody has to do it.
Day 9.  We left about 9.30am after a leisurely breakfast with our rainsuits on and
headed for Le Mans.  We managed to find the circuit and had a ride around to find
the Mulsanne straight but gave up due to the rain becoming torrential.  We got onto
the motorway and headed for Calais via Alencon, Rouen and Abbeville.  It rained
all the way to Calais - 316 miles - but it was still great fun.
We arrived 2 hours early for the 6.30pm ferry. The UK immigration officer insisted
I remove my helmet so he could check my passport photo. What a pain when you
have got all your wet weather gear on. I can only assume terrorists or illegal
immigrants are buying motorbikes to enter England now.
I enjoyed this trip so much that soon after returning booked a holiday with a
motorbike tour company to go to the Italian Dolomites. It’s taken me months to get
around to writing up this trip and I can still remember every day so vividly, even
most of the French roads that we travelled. So if you are thinking of doing a trip get
on and get it booked: you won’t regret it.
