Our Garmin is an up-
to-date, highly
knowledgeable satnav
with every available
download. If she can’t
find large, well-known
hotels whilst we’re
sitting in the comfort of
our own home, I don’t
rate our chances of
riding straight to a little
Logis in the middle of a
rain storm.
I know what you’re all
thinking: a bad
workman always
blames his tools. But
this thing is supposed
to be an aid not a
hindrance to getting
somewhere.
Phil West says, “Even
with the up-to-date
maps my Garmin still
manages to “lose”
some minor roads from
time to time
(Faversham Road
between Charing and
Shottenden for example). Taking the shortest route can sometimes take you
across ploughed fields! If you drive off the loaded map it thinks you’re an
aircraft and delivers a direct flight path rather than a route”. He discovered that
in France last year when he forgot to load a map segment for middle
Normandy.
So the old Michelin man will be keeping new kid on the block Ruby company
on our next touring holiday.
And as Phil says, “Satnavs lie” so we’ll be reading the road signs too!
