January Club Night 2026

Julie Emmett from Biketrac was our presenter at our January Club Night and provided us with a comprehensive view of not just Tracking systems but some useful information on hard security and theft risk in general.

Some interesting points were raised: -

Notably, if you have a ‘Thatcham’ approved tracker such as BikeTrac on your bike, your chances of it being recovered are up above the 90% mark. There are a few reasons for this not least the full-time monitoring of the devices and the tracker company’s ability to liaise directly with the police.

There was a lively discussion about hard security:  locks, chains etc.  Points that came up, some more obvious than others, included:

  • Select hard security that resists cutters and grinders, sounds obvious but...
  • If you use a disc lock or similar attach it to the back wheel – it makes the thief’s job that much harder.
  • Think about a more robust design of lock i.e. one that is capable of securing the rear wheel to the frame.
  • Think about whether or not you need to use a steering lock – a thief breaking it might render your bike a write-off. (Check your insurance policy though)
  • If you use a lock and chain, consider what you are attaching it too, both on and off the bike – e.g. can you connect the chain to that robust replacement you bought for your disc lock?
  • If you use a chain keep it and the lock off the ground to help resist attack

And more.  The publications from the links above make for interesting reading.

Lastly there was some information on the geography of bike thefts.  Bennetts publish some interesting data here: -

UK motorcycle theft report February: Crime trends & arrest stories

Interesting but as with all stats you need to look at the numbers with care.  Whilst thefts in Kent went down between December and January the number of machines stolen is still amongst the highest in the country (London excluded of course)

Lastly an offer that will be of interest to anyone in EKAM who already has a BikeTrac, or perhaps is intending to get one.  You can email Julie directly on: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  tell her the serial number of your BikeTrac device together with your IAM membership number and she will add 3 months of subscription onto your account completely free of charge.  It only works once mind – if you’ve blagged the discount before at some time in the past I’m afraid you can’t have it again!

Our thanks to Julie and BikeTrac for providing both a most interesting evening and for the offer of a gratis 3-month contribution to a BikeTrac subscription.
